The battle between butterfly vs. stand-up (newly dubbed “hybrid” and not the old Grant Fuhr stand-up) has been an important one in the last decade or more. I’d say that the war is being won by the butterfly enthusiasts. It’s been said that because of the strength of the shots coming towards the net are now so hard that anticipatory goaltending has been adopted to compensate; a valid argument. Does that allow one to excel to the top tier of goaltending though?

I’ll name some of the all time greats of hybrids: Martin Brodeur, Tim Thomas, Dominik Hasek, Chris Osgoode (he’s won cups and has tons of wins), Dwayne Roloson, Cujo, Pekka Rinne, etc. This class of gentlemen can arguably make a respectable run for the hall of fame. All of the above adopted the stand-up or a reactive style of goaltending.

Let’s not leave out the butterfly honourable mentions though. Of course we have Pat Roy, J.S. Giguere, Felix Potvin (have include him in a butterfly conversation) and Carey Price who all deserve mention, but how many are actually locks for the Hall (except Roy).

(I may have left some out of both lists, but don’t shoot me for it)

I do believe that anticipatory goaltending has taken over the NHL (to the liking of Francois Allaire). But is it producing all time great goaltending? I argue no. The longevity of the butterfly goalie is not apparent in the league. Look at the revolving door or “all star” goalies go through to the back up tendy or a prospect coming up in the rankings on many teams in the last decade.

I will argue that the butterfly goalie will have a more difficult time becoming great. But with some of the all time stand ups either retired or getting old, what’s next? I guess those all time stand-up greats better get spreading their seed or make players go back to the wooden twig.

I would be interested to see the effects of a shift in teaching would have on producing great goaltenders. Granted, teaching “The Hasek Flop” is a bit extreme, but I think implanting the thought of reaction rather than anticipation would bring some added integrity to the position. I think the lost art of reaction is become extinct and I for that I anguish.

Agree, disagree, discuss!

The rent a goalie industry in Toronto has seen quite the Yo-Yo effect over the years. Toronto is one of those markets that can support the goalie rental industry based on the fact there’s just so much hockey going on out there, so few available goalies and the understanding that if need be it’s okay to spend money on a rent a goalie.

In the past few years we’ve seen lots of rent a goalie services pop up. We’ve seen them through the growth in the number of goalie rental websites and seeing things like free listings on sites like Kijiji and Craigslist, to seeing guys wearing company jerseys and many other things in between. Every fall we generally see an influx of companies try to make a go of things but very few remain.

In fact, there are less than 10 goalie rental services in the GTA that are actively renting goalies for local games. It’s a bit of a chicken and the egg story – you need goalies if you want to take on games, but you also need games if you have a roster of goalies! It’s definitely not an easy business to get off the ground.

That’s why it’s important that if you’re going to rent a goalie that you find a reputable service. They’ll be able to service your needs best.

Adult level hockey is happening all over the Greater Toronto Area, morning till night, 365 days a year. It’s a hard-pressed move to go to a rink these days and not find a group of men slapping a puck all over the ice. The most important position on the ice inevitably falls on the shoulders of the goalie. Of course he needs to be there to stop pucks. But more importantly he needs to be there!
Empty nets have long been a problem in men’s league hockey. Nobody likes to shoot on an empty net for an hour or more. Sure, it’s cool to hit the top corner with a slap shot breaking down the wing. But when you look up to find a gaping empty net the cool factor of that goal just went down the drain.
As a Toronto goalie I’ve found myself in the enviable position of being able to play hockey games for pay. I fill an empty net for the team, give them a solid game and in return I make a little coin to put in my pocket. It’s a nice kickback – gas for the car, dinner, cash towards new gear, etc.
Being a Toronto goalie also gives me a long list of games to play. There’s always hockey going on in the GTA. Early morning skates, lunch skates, late afternoon games all the way up to the late night red-eye games. It’s really up to the Toronto goalie to figure out his/her schedule and fit those games in.
Probably the best way to go about being a Toronto goalie for pay is to sign up with a goalie rental service. That way you can let the service work to find you games and you can sit back and wait for them to come in. If you’re looking for a great goalie rental service in Toronto then you can try MyPuck Goalie Rental or click to book a rent a goalie.

It was a busy October 6th for me! The day at work was busy, in meetings, on the phone with clients, simple running at a fast pace from 9am to 5pm. But sure, that’s nothing too crazy, I mean, let’s face it, others do the same thing day in and day out! The down side to this day was missing out on the Leafs season opener at the bar with some co-workers. (Side note: nice to see the Leafs pull off a 2-0 win!).

It was a bit of a special but busy day for me. I had a 7:15pm game with my usual Thursday team. However, it was me and 3 teammates so we had to borrow 3 more guys and we still won! Great job by the guys on that win. I had more on my mind. I had a goalie rental skate at 11pm and I wanted to pick up my newly painted mask before that skate. Oh ya, I had to wear a mask I got in 1996 for the 7:15pm game. I can’t believe it’s that old now but it was a fabulous paint job that really spoke about the future of mask painting (I’ll try to add a photo in a while).

So here’s the thing. I end up going from Scarborough Ice Sports to Mississauga to pick up my fresh mask. I hightail it back to Rinx for my 11pm game as a goalie rental. I get there in time but by now I’ve barely eaten anything all day, getting tired and it’s cold in the rink. That didn’t stop me from getting a shutout in a 2-0 victory!

Is there a moral to this goalie rental story? Probably not. It was just a bit of a wild ride on a long day logging lot’s of miles having lots of fun. I guess it earned me a well-deserved Thanksgiving meal!

It’s a regular occurrence in men’s league hockey; your goalie can’t make it, no buddies with access to a goalie… so… you need to rent a goalie! Renting a goalie for a skate is an easy enough process these days. You can do a search for a goalie rental service on Google and come up with a long list of choices.

Need a goalie rental? What’s the best way to contact a service? Well, if you have a game or shinny skate happening in a short time frame then your best bet is to pick up the phone and call. If you have some time before your skate then you can email the company or fill out an online form. That will give the goalie rental service some time to get things set up for you.

Getting a goalie rental isn’t a hard process at the end of the day. Just get in touch with a service that fits your needs and away you go. If you are looking for a goalie rental service that has a lot of experience then give MyPuck a call and they can help you out.

Getting a goalie rental for a 6am Tuesday morning skate might sound like a rough time but for the goalies on the MyPuck roster it’s business as usual. I’d like to say I love the dedication of the guys and gals on our roster who take on skates that other goalies normally wouldn’t bat an eye at.

Early morning weekday skates are a staple of the adult hockey world. Player’s use it as a time for exercise, comradery, and of course the excitement of a good game of hockey. It’s not an easy puck drop time and when you’re in need of a goalie, the rent a goalie route is the one to go in.

Our goalies thrive on taking any types of games that come in and a big thanks goes out to the entire roster for getting up early and making their way to these types of skates.

If you need to book a goalie for an early morning skate then call on MyPuck Goalie Rental to get the job done and get you a quality goalie.
